Life: Francisco de Zurbar¨¢n, of Basque origin, is yet another of those artists whose works were relatively unknown (in this case, outside of his native Spain) until recent times...which has made his collectors happy collectors, indeed. He worked in oils and was clearly, at some point, acquainted with the works of Michelangelo. Zurbar¨¢n is best known for his religious themes, though he also painted still-lifes and, for a few years, court portraits in Madrid.
